Qutub Minar, Delhi


The 238 feet magnificent Qutub Minar stands at the Southern part of the Capital City. The majestic structure was built by Qutubuddin Aibak, a Muslim ruler, in the year 1193.The tower is adorn by bands of Inscription and by four projecting balconies supported by ornamented brackets. It is said that Qutub Minar was built to celebrate the victory of Mohammed Ghori, the invader of the Afghanistan, over the Rajputs in 1192. The majestic structure was partly completed by Qutubuddin Aibak (1192-98) and the rest was completed by Iltutmish, another Muslim king. The Minar stands in front of Quwwatul Masjid. It is best example of Indo- Islamic architecture.

» Quwwat-ul-Islam-Mosque : This rectangular courtyard was built by Qutub-Din Aibak and is located north of Minar. It consist of rectangular courtyard surrounded by cloisters.

» Ala-I Darwaza : The southern gateway of the mosque was constructed by Al Alau'd-Din Khilji. This is the first building that employed Islamic principles of construction.

» Tomb of Iltutumish : Built during 1222-36 AD, this plain square chamber of red sandstone has inscription and geometrical patterns in Saracenic tradition on the entrances and in the interiors.

» Ala'I Minar : It was made with an intention that it should be twice the size of Qutub Minar and was located north of the Minar.

» Iron Pillar : Within the courtyard stands the famous Iron Pillar that dates back to 4th century. The pillar has Sanskrit inscription in Gupta Script. The inscription records that the pillar was set up as a standard or dhvaja of god Vishnu on the hill known as 'Vishnupada', in the memory of a mighty king, named 'Chandra', who is now regarded as identical with Chandragupta II (375-413) of the imperial Gupta dynasty.

Tourists shall also visit the Tomb of Adham Khan and Zafar Mahal in Mehrauli and the Tomb of Jamali-Kamali behind the Qutub Minar that lies close to the vicinity.

Location
The Qutub Minar is in South Delhi and is 13 km south of Connaught Place. It is easily accessible by buses, taxis and auto-rickshaws.
