Common Wealth Games 2010, is
scheduled between 3rd October to 14th October. New Delhi holds great pride
in hosting one of the largest multi-sport event. It is first time that
common wealth games are to be held in India. The multi-sport event will be
held on grand scale featuring the elite athletes of the world.
» History of Common Wealth Games
Earlier this grand event was held in the year 1930, titled as 'British
Empire games'. Later on, the name was changed to Common Wealth games in
1978. Till date, this is the second time that such kind of grand event will
be organised in Asia.
» Managing Committee
India sports minister will manage the affairs of a committee while Mr.
Suresh Kalmadi, President of Indian Olympic Association, will act as a head
of the organising committee. Elite of the athletes from seventy-two
countries will participate in this grand international event.
» Delhi Game Village
Many infrastructural changes have occurred in the capital city and new
venues are being set up. The Delhi Game Village is to be constructed on the
eastern bank of river Yamuna, covering an area of approximately 63.5
hectares, with a capacity to accommodate 8,500 officials and athletes.
» 2010 Common Wealth Games Event Schedule
Seventeen sports are to be included in the upcoming common wealth games. It
includes Gymnastics, Athletics, Table Tennis, Badminton, Rugby sevens,
Boxing, Aquatics, Weightlifting, EAD events, Hockey, Netball,, Shooting
Squash, Bowls and Cycling.

» Preparations by Delhi Government
Delhi Government is trying all possible ways to make this occasion
auspicious one. Public holiday is declared on the closing ceremony of Games,
i.e. is on 14th October. Pubic transportation have been improved by
introducing Low floor A/C DTC buses and Metro feeder buses. Local
transportation has included 5000 new cabs to travel around the city. Strict
security arrangements will be made at Games Village and other venues of
common wealth games. To keep check on any kind of disturbance and trouble,
special monitoring equipments like electronic surveillance, CCTV, X-ray
baggage scanner etc are placed on the important locations.
