Temples in Delhi
Being the Capital city of India,
Delhi endorses some of the main temple in
India, such as Bahai temple, Birla Mandir. Since people from varied religion
lives here, it also houses some important mosques and Gurudwara's.
» Bahai Temple : The Bahai temple is in the shape of lotus and
is built in pure white marble. The Bahai faith considers number nine as
sacred and use of this number is found exclusively in their architecture.
The temple has nine pools on the elevated platform signify the green leaves
of the lotus and cool the stark, elegant interior.
The sleek architecture has two layers of nine white marble-covered petals
that point to the heaven and a lower level of nine petals that conceal the
portals. Designed by Fariburz Sahba, an Iranian-born Canadian architect, the
temple was completed in 1986. The temple's contours resemble a fantastic
work of origami rising out of the earth.
» ISKON Temples: (The International Society for Krishna Consciousness)
Founded by A. C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada , founder of acharya of the
hare krishna movement. ISKON was initially raised as a spiritual society in
New York to Propagate the message of the Bhagwad Gita. In India there are
about 40 ISKCON temples. Contemplating the traditions of the ancient
Vaishnava tradition, its philosophy and practice, these spiritual temples
have left a mark on all mankind. Located in East of Kailash,it is one of the
largest Lord Krishna Temple in Delhi vicinity.The main attraction of the
temple is the Robort, who enact and preach the Gita.
» Chattarpur Temple : Located at a distance of 4kms from Qutub
Minar, this temple is a classic example of modern temple architecture. The
temple is devoted to Goddess Durga. During Navratras, the place attracts
large number of devotees.
» Birla Mandir : Built in 20th century, this is one of the
landmark in New Delhi. The temple is devoted to Laxmi Narain (Vishnu). It
took six years to complete the site and was inaugurated by Mahtama Gandhi.
The Geeta Bahvan, within the complex, endorses beautiful painting depicting
Indian mythology.
Religion in Delhi
Delhi has a varied population with several religious groups residing in the
city. The majority religion is Hinduism and Punjabis while a large section
of Muslims and Sikhs have a strong presence here. Christians and other minor
religious groups also co-exist.
