Puri India

Puri is located 60 kms from Bhubaneswar on the coast of the Bay Bengal. It is one of the four Dhamas of India-Puri, Dwarka, Rameswaram and Badrinatha. Puri is called Sri Purusottam or Martya Vaikuntha, thea abode of Lord Vishnu on earth. Puri is included in the Golden Triangle of Orissa together with Bhubaneswar and Konark. It's home to the 12th century Jagannath Temple.

The four principles of Puri are Mahodadhi (the deep blue sea), Baba Danda (the main road in the city), Mahaprasada (the offering to Lord Jagannath) and Swargadwara (the beach, gateway to heaven).

Tourist attraction
» Jagannath Temple : The name of Jagannatha literally means Lord Of the Universe. It is said that the temple was began by the King Chora Ganga Deva and finished by his descendent, Anangabhima,in the 12th centuary.

Acknowledged as one of the four dhams or most sacred Hindu pilgrimages along the four cardinal points - the other three are Dwarka in Gujarat (west), Badrinath in Uttar Pradesh (north) and Rameswaram in Tamil Nadu (south). The Jagannath Temple was one of the first temples to allow entry to all Hindus, regardless of caste. However, the temple remains rigidly out of bounds for non-Hindus who may catch a glimpse of it from the roof of the library opposite the temple.

Jagannath Temple

The main temple structure is 65 m high and is built on the elevated ground, which makes it look even larger and adds to the imposing impression you get as you come within the sight of the temple.

» Gundicha Mandir : This temple is located at the end of Grand Road about 3kms northeast of the Jagannatha temple. It is also known as the Garden House, becomes the home of the images of the gods during the week-long Rath Yatra. The temple is closed to non-Hindus and is set amidst a beautiful garden. It is said that the wife of Indradyumna ,the king who originally established Jagannatha , was known as Gundicha.
